Limitations

AI tools have serious limitations that are easily obscured by overconfident language, both from stakeholders (such as the companies that make the tools) and the output of the tool itself. Awareness of these limitations will allow you to better evaluate whether to use AI, which tool to use, and whether to trust its output.

Common Sense, Originality, and Ethical Reasoning

AI can make decisions and generate content from provided data and previously learned "rules." It cannot match human powers of creativity or originality. Nor can AI truly ethically evaluate its own content or make ethically-informed decisions about what to do with its output. Moreover, some argue that AI use actively stifles humans' creative capacity by outsourcing critical thought.

Hallucinations

"Hallucinations" refer to AI-generated content that is false or inaccurate. Examples include sources that do not exist, links that lead nowhere, or untrue facts. When asked for a list of references, an LLM generates a plausible list of what sources wouldlook like on that topic, not necessarily what sources actually exist on that topic. LLMs are prediction machines. They cannot fact-check or "understand" the content they are generating.

Some AI tools do link to real sources for research purposes. However, even for these tools, there are limitations in their available content (see "Source Accessibility" below).

Bias

Bias in AI training and output can have serious consequences, especially if users accept results without critical examination or assume that "machine"-generated content must be neutral. Factors that are vulnerable to bias include training data (resulting in models that "learn" harmful patterns and associations) and human guidance for AI models.

The Generative AI Quest: A Choose Your Own Adventure

You stand at the threshold of the Generative AI Gauntlet, a realm filled with powerful tools that can create text, images, and more. Before you dive in, you must consider your purpose. Your first challenge: When considering (and permitted to) use Generative AI, ask yourself:

Does it matter if the output is true?

A. Yes, accuracy is absolutely vital for my project. (Go to Section 1)

B. No, strict factual accuracy isn't the primary goal; I'm looking for ideas, creativity, or general content. (Go to Section 2)

Section 1: The Path of Truth

You've chosen the path where truth matters. A wise choice, for the AI realm is not always tethered to reality.

Your next question: Do you have the expertise to verify that the AI's output is accurate?

A. Yes, I am an expert in this field and can meticulously check every detail. (Go to Section 3)

B. No, this area is outside my expertise, and I couldn't reliably confirm the AI's claims. (Go to Section 4)

Section 2: The Creative Commons Crossroads

You've chosen a path where strict truth isn't the main concern, focusing more on creativity or brainstorming.

Your next question: Do you need to retain full copyright over the material you're creating?

A. Yes, this needs to be my original, fully copyrighted work, free from AI entanglements. (Go to Section 4)

B. No, I'm okay with the material potentially existing in a more collaborative or less strictly owned space, or it's for internal use. (Go to Section 5)

Section 3: The Labyrinth of Responsibility

You're an expert and can verify the AI's output – excellent! But even experts face risks.

Your next question: Are you able and willing to take full responsibility (legal, moral, fiscal, etc.) for any missed inaccuracies that the AI might generate?

A. Yes, I understand the gravity and am prepared to shoulder all consequences. (Go to Section 5)

B. No, I cannot or am unwilling to take on that level of ultimate responsibility. (Go to Section 4)

Section 4: The Unsafe Abyss

Your journey has led you to a precarious precipice. Given your needs or limitations, continuing down this path with Generative AI is...

UNSAFE TO USE GENAI

(Your adventure ends here for this particular project. Seek alternative methods or re-evaluate your requirements.)

Section 5: The Acknowledged Ascent

You've navigated the initial trials! Your chosen path suggests a viable route for AI integration.

Your next challenge is ongoing:

POSSIBLE TO USE GENAI, WITH CARE & ACKNOWLEDGMENT.

(Before you proceed with your project, you must take these steps:)

Review all AI output for bias, accuracy, and common sense.

Always acknowledge the use of Generative AI in your work.

(Congratulations, you may now use Generative AI, but remain vigilant and responsible on your continued adventure!)
