Artificial Intelligence impacts people in a variety of ways including cognitively, behaviorally, and emotionally. When thinking about the ethical use of AI in your own practice, it can be useful to consider these impacts and highlight them for library users. 

  • Impact on Mental health

    • Studies have shown that Interacting with Generative AI tools can contribute to or exacerbate loneliness. 

    • Developing a relationship with AI Instead of with peers

  • Use In physical and mental health self-diagnosis

    • Patients asking for and taking medical advice from Generative AI tools 

  • Loss of critical thinking

    • Studies are now demonstrating that non-experts using AI to gain answers are experiencing loss In critical thinking skills  

The methods and data used to build and train AI can include biases as information inputted or scraped by the tools ... The intersection of race and gender bias can be found in search algorithms, facial recognition software, and Generative AI results as highlighted by scholars such as  Safiya Noble, Emily Bender et. al., and Joy Buolamwini among others.

  • Racism

Additionally, there are ethical concerns regarding children's use of AI as well as training subjects for AI models.
